What you'll do
Viasat operates a fleet of 20+ satellites to provide a wide range of global communications services for the maritime, air and land based communities.
The Satellite Operations Support Group (SOSG) provides day-to-day software support to the two Satellite Control Centres (SCC) based in the UK/NL and the US.
The Viasat SCC uses 2 main product for satellite control: I4S, a joint development between the SOSG Group and L-3Harris and Kratos Epoch product. As a result of product sales since 2000, I4S has a growing community of external users, who require maintenance and updates.
A system administrator is required to take up within the team the responsibility of the regular and long-term maintenance of the complete suite of hardware/software used by the Viasat SCC. The SatOps department has a range of Linux, Solaris and Windows servers used exclusively for Satellite Monitoring, Control and Analysis.
We are seeking services for the support of our hardware estate consisting of 100+ physical and virtual machines.
The day-to-day
- General maintenance of Windows and RHEL machines – application installations/upgrades, performance monitoring and troubleshooting
- Co-ordinated and timely Installation of MS Updates (patches are released monthly)
- Management of users in Microsoft Active Directory
- Management of GPO’s (Group Policy Objects) Perform maintenance activities on all hardware Microsoft Windows servers and workstations
- Take responsibility for the SCC periodic data backups, monitoring the system performance/health
- Support for third party tools such as Simulators, BeyondInsight, GMV FocusSuite and Enhanced File Transfer as well as scripts and workflows required by the SCC teams
- Participation on the 24x7x365 on call rota
Clearance may be required from government bodies for access to secure data and facilities. The candidate must be willing to supply personal information, as requested, in support of any of these security clearances.
The candidate may be occasionally required to provide 24-hour on-call support; this function will require the carrying of a mobile phone. In event of an operational need whilst on-call the candidate would be required to arrive at the control centre within an hour of callout.
What you'll need
- Windows Server (2022,2016), Windows 7/10/11 desktop
- Microsoft Active Directory and GPO experience
- Knowledge of VMware vSphere ESX
- Experience with RHEL
- Some experience of HP/Dell hardware
- Good knowledge of TCP/IP networks, including routing equipment, plus general principles of data communications
- Some experience as a system administrator on high availability systems, but training will be provided
